Caring for your teeth and braces during Christmas
Busy days and late nights make routines easy to skip. Keep it simple and consistent.
- Brush twice a day for two minutes, and add a quick clean after sugary or sticky snacks. If you wear fixed braces, angle the bristles above and below the brackets.
- Use interdental brushes around brackets and under wires. They are quick, gentle, and excellent at removing trapped food.
- Rinse with a fluoride mouthwash once a day, at a different time to brushing. This helps strengthen enamel when sweets are in easy reach.
- Keep a pocket kit with a travel toothbrush, mini mouthwash, interdental brushes, and orthodontic wax. It makes party clean-ups easy and stops small irritations becoming big issues.
- Drink water often. A sip after treats helps wash away sugars and acids.
- If something rubs, use orthodontic wax and try a warm saltwater rinse. If a bracket or wire loosens, call us for advice before it becomes uncomfortable.
Treats to enjoy and ones to avoid with orthodontic appliances
You can still enjoy festive food. The trick is choosing textures that are brace friendly and aligner smart.
Good choices for fixed braces
- Soft chocolates without nuts or hard toffee pieces
- Yoghurt, trifle, cheesecake, sponge cake, and soft mince pies
- Sliced fruits, cheese boards, and soft sandwiches
- Roast dinners cut into small pieces
Treats to avoid with fixed braces
- Sticky caramels, toffees, and chewing gum - they cling to brackets and pull at wires
- Hard nuts, candy canes, and boiled sweets - they can snap brackets if you bite down
- Crusty breads or crackling, unless well softened or cut small
If you wear Invisalign®, remove your aligners to eat and drink anything other than plain water. Rinse your mouth and aligners before popping them back in. Try to stick to your recommended wear time, ideally 22 hours a day. If you know you will be at a long event, plan mealtimes so you are not tempted to graze for hours with aligners out.
Party-proof hygiene on busy days
Celebrations can stack up quickly. A little planning keeps your smile on track.
- Set a daily reminder for your main evening brush and floss. Protect that window even if you get home late.
- Carry sugar-free gum for after-meal freshness if you do not have braces. If you do have fixed braces, skip gum and use a travel brush instead.
- Choose lighter coloured sauces and drinks to reduce staining. Think prosecco or gin with soda rather than red wine. If you do have a darker drink, sip water alongside.
- If you whitened recently and your teeth feel sensitive, use a toothpaste for sensitivity and avoid very hot or very cold foods for a few days.
Keeping your smile bright all winter long
Glossy enamel and tidy edges photograph beautifully under twinkly lights. Protect brightness now and plan for a New Year refresh.
- Use a whitening toothpaste with low abrasivity to help lift surface stains without scratching enamel.
- Limit strong colourants like red wine, mulled wine, black tea, soy sauce, and curry. Rinse with water after you enjoy them.
- Do not whiten over active fixed braces. Colour can develop unevenly around brackets. If you are close to brace removal, ask us when whitening would be safest.
- If you are in aligners, some whitening plans can pair with treatment. We will confirm suitability and product strength for your case.
- For a predictable, even result, book professional whitening with custom trays. Dentist-prescribed gels balance brightening with sensitivity control.

What to do if something goes wrong
Festive mishaps happen. If a bracket comes loose, a wire pokes, or an aligner cracks, do not panic.
- Save any loose parts and note when it happened.
- Use wax to cushion sharp spots. If you cannot place wax, a small piece of clean cotton can help briefly.
- Switch to your previous or next aligner only if we advise it. A poor fit can slow progress.
- Call us on 01902 341991 during opening hours. For urgent orthodontic problems, use our emergency line on 01902 731734. We will guide you on safe next steps and arrange a visit if needed.

A note for aligner users
December can be the toughest month for wear time. A few tips help you stay on track.
- Start a new Invisalign® aligner early in the day, not at night. You will have more hours to adapt and stay motivated.
- Use a timer when aligners are out. Aim to keep meals and snacks within a combined two-hour window.
- Keep your case with you. Never wrap aligners in a napkin. That is how they end up in the bin.
- Clean aligners gently with a soft brush and cool water. Hot water can warp them.
